NOTE,
The Possibles bag has been carried since the 1700. Possible bag was for trapper and hunters where the same style of bag called a Haversack was used for everyday ware. They have been around a long time. In those days, the mountain man carried a possible bag, in which he carried everything that he could possibly need for the day: black powder, powder measurer, flint and steel, lead balls and patch, and a skinning knife, and other things.
Possibles bag was the name given by early traders to these rectangular soft-skin bags. The term is a direct translation from the Indian word meaning 'a bag for every possible thing. A more accurate term might be storage or tipi bag, as these containers held personal items and were placed around the inside of the tipi.
The side-slung book bag is very popular on the college campus. Also known as a messenger bag or book bag, it is a satchel that can be carried and used for many things. I carry my own possibles/book bag. I use it every day to hold my stuff when I am out and working. It is great for holding my wallet, keys, cell phone, a book I can read at lunch time, and stuff to write with.
